Do Reels, TikTok and Shorts need different video files?

Usually not. All three are vertical platforms built around a 9:16 frame, commonly exported at 1080x1920, so one well-made master can serve all of them. What differs is the interface laid over the video: each app places its caption, profile name and buttons in slightly different spots near the bottom and right edge, and those overlays move as the apps update.

The practical answer is to design for the overlap rather than for one app. Keep faces, product shots and on-screen text inside the central area of the frame, away from the bottom strip and the right-hand column, and the same file will read cleanly wherever it is posted. If one platform matters far more to your business than the others, check the final cut on that app's own preview before publishing, since a preview is the only reliable test of what a viewer will actually see.

How can a local business cross-post one video without it looking recycled?

Edit one master with clean audio and captions burned into the safe area, then export it without any platform's watermark. Uploading a file downloaded from one app to another carries that app's logo across, which looks second-hand and gives viewers a reason to scroll past.

Write the caption separately for each platform even when the video is identical. A TikTok caption tends to be short and conversational, an Instagram caption can carry the address and the booking line, and a YouTube Shorts title is searched, so it should name the thing people would type. Add the location and the business name in each one; a local viewer deciding where to eat or whom to call needs both. Keep a simple sheet of what was posted where and when, so that a video that does well on one app can be scheduled for the others.
